"Forefend" is used, yet again...

From George Will, in tonight's News-Gazette:

"Mere numbers?  Heaven forefend.  That is how people speak when numerical metrics--numbers of popular votes and delegates--are inconvenient."

I'm not sure if I disagree with Mr. Will's spelling, or the News-Gazette's; I usually spell it "forfend".

But I'm still tickled to see it getting some popular use!

"forfend" rising

I think "forfend" is a lovely word, and for many years I would read or hear someone use it about once a month.

Lately, it seems, I am hearing or seeing it used more often.

Has anyone else noticed this?  Or am I starting to show my age?
