I love wine as much as the next person, but this is a bit excessive.  :-)   On second thought, this may not be excessive if it applied to a high speed train.   :-)

Slow news day:  Rosales Accused of Not Checking on Dog He Hit

This is really a story?

Weel Pattsi, things are not quite what they seem.

Read the Napa Valley Wine Train response to this claim which originated with John McCain.

Not a dog lover huh. It is a story if its your dog.

IlliniPundit's picture

It's a story to me if it's my dog.  But is it a story for the entire County?

Much like Tigers transgressions,  City Council members DUI's  being of interest to the public, when you have a member of the CB who does something not quite right i.e. not stopping after hitting a dog, then perhaps it is news.

IlliniPundit's picture

A DUI I can understand being a story, but a "he said, she said" story about a car hitting a dog?

IP-  Why do you and all republicans hate puppies?  :)

IlliniPundit's picture

Heh.  Because Karl Rove told us to?

I bought a bedroom TV and a rice cooker online from Amazon Tuesday evening. Both were delivered on Thursday morning – free delivery and NO sales tax. Yes, 36 hour service. I’m aware that I should pay a “use tax” but I have no idea how to go about doing so. I would hazard a guess that I am not alone.

Amazon has $20 Billion in sales. Illinois is the 5th largest state. So a WAG would be $1 Billion sales in Illinois or $50 million in avoided state sales tax + the local share of same. This is only one online retailer, and $50 million that Illinois really needs. My tax bill would amount to $20, but Illinois makes no attempt to even make taxpayers aware of their obligation, to their detriment.

Illinois doesn't make you aware of such an obligation because you don't have one.

Well I'll be damned. I've never heard of such an idiotic and barely enforceable provision before. Volunteer or the gov could guestimate for you to compensate for the fact that our tax system makes us less competitive! Perhaps next they can demand people come forward to pay sales tax on used goods because that's just unfair to people who sell new stuff. Gimme a friggin break.

Actually, IP, it is.

I find the defensive, arrogant attitude of Rosales very telling. (examples: "Rosales said he and his neighbor, Klose, have a long history of disputes, that she "despises me" and "she just wants to slam me politically." and "get out of my face.")

It's nice to juxtapose his warm and fuzzy political marketing literature with his total disregard for an animal's welfare. If he can't make a compassionate, rational decision to check on a dog--injured through his actions--then why should the public place its trust in him?

But you can't judge that from the story, because it's just a "he said, she said" situation.  Absent anything more substantial, this is a complete non-story IMO.

Yeah, the story was disturbing, but it wasn't clear what really happened.  Poor doggie, though.

Glock wrongly states, "Illinois doesn't make you aware of such an obligation because you don't have one."

From IDR website---"If the seller (typically an out-of-state business, such as a catalog company or a retailer making sales on the Internet) does not charge Illinois Sales Tax, the purchaser must pay the tax directly to the department."

"Glock wrongly states..."

Yeah, if it wasn't clear in my post after that, I was conceding that I was wrong... though also baffled at such an idiotic and unenforceable law on the books.

It seems unlikely that many people will bother to fill out the form and pay the taxes, though.  One thing that concerned me about the proposed sales tax increase in Champaign County was that it's easy to avoid sales tax period when you buy things online, and if the rate keeps going up, people may be more likely to go that route.

An item of used property sold at a fixed place of business - as in a consignment shop or at an auction barn - is already taxable.
