SI did a fan survey and while by their own admission, the survey doesn't do justice to the older parks like Wrigley and Fenway, the internals are interesting, including the observation that Cardinal fans have the highest baseball IQ. I wish I could say I disagree, but I can't. I will argue with the Sox fans being ahead of the Cubs' fans however. I guess it depends on how you rate eternal pessimism vs. eternal optimism.

I'd argue that masochism is a greater factor in being a Cubs fan than anything else. My first wrigley game was roughly 20 years ago... and I still keep coming back for more abuse.

I question the intelligence of anyone who follows a sport as poorly managed as major league baseball.
Versus the finely tuned and well oiled machine of goevernment??? :)
IP- ouch.
Let's try this again.... I question the intelligence of anyone who follows politics in a state as poorly managed as Illinois. :-P
Bud Selig makes Rod Blagojevich look like an honest, competent manager who excels at long-term planning.
But,,at least they are making money hand over fist,,,,,not blowing it:)
Big League Baseball should be the dream example,,,,,free from anti-trust laws,,,free agency,,everyone after a certain time frame can go for all the bucks they feel they deserve,,,Millions of people pay big money to fill the stands,,,America at its best,,,We even had the Japanese in WW 2 shouting at our Marines, "Go to hell, Babe Ruth". Blago needed a bag man to keep a lien off his home,,,you want to play you gotta pay!! I bet Blago would have made a good shortstop,,he just looks the part,,,maybe one of those country club prisons has a ball team he can sign up for,,George Ryan can be used as the back stop, But, seriously think of that infield! Blago,,Rezco,,,,Ata, Ryan, maybe Kelly in there, with Cellini making book in the dugout.
I guess it depends on how you rate eternal pessimism vs. eternal optimism.
Eternal pessimism is a perfect follow-up to Catholic school.
I find the tradition rankings to be interesting - the Cardinals went out and won a World Series in their first season in the new ballpark. How are the Cubs doing in their new home? (Damn snarky Sox fan)
My son would say that the IQ part of being a Cardinals fan is accurate. The masochistic optimism of the Cubs fan is similar to the mental alchemy that imagines John McCain morphing into a Ronald Reagan.
Typical Cardinal fan?
You likely knew a lot more about this picture and the connotation than me. I had to do some research and this link seems to have a definitive clue as to what this St. Louis guy was doing. And it's good to know specifically Which Idiot one should be paying attention to...
Sweet - I had no idea of the context, actually.
That picture has shown up frequently throughout the years on IlliniBoard, usually in reference to Missouri Tigers fans.
The Cubs played well today. Kerry Wood leads the majors (probably minors, too) in blown saves. Soriano let a double over his head, Johnson's error (actually Fukedome's) cost them a couple, Fukedome made sure by letting one over his head, and my oh my oh my, the Cubs are at it again.
This is supposed to be the Cubs year, Soriano being the 136 million dollar man, and the Cards are supposed to be in an ugly rebuilding year. It's early, but the handwriting is on the wall. In a few weeks you'll be able to see Kerry Wood in Peoria, a shorter drive, cheaper seats, and a place where he might almost dominate.
Actually this was a self-survey - asking fans about their opinion of their own home stadium. In other words Cards fans think that they have the highest baseball IQ. And yes, I am a Cards fans. And yes, I am a genius. ;)
Interesting context on that classic 'morans' guy that has haunted Cards fans since the dawn of the internet. I had always wondered about that.
Just a point of interest. If the State of Illinois or the Federal Government or both designated Wrigley Field as a National Historic Monument, its name could never be changed.
Personally, I really do like Wrigley field and the neighborhood, much better than any other park I have been in, both old and new. So I would not be upset about that kind of action. But the State sure in Hell does not need to buy it.
