I have never voted for a Republican for president. (I would have voted for George Bush senior against Clinton, if Bush senior had not switched his stated views on abortion to appease the conservatives in his party.) However I would not be upset if John McCain prevailed, (which does not necessarily mean I would vote for him).

Unlike Mike, since my first voting experience in 1964, I have only voted for one canidate from either party who became President. Some would say I have a very poor record of success. However, I am an advocate of a smaller Federal government which stays completely out of family and religious decisions. As a result most of our Presidents have not been aligned with my views.

I think Fred Thompson holds federalism in high regard.
I would have voted for John McCain in 2000 had he won the Republican nomination. Now, not so much.
McCain is still my top pick of all Dems and Repubs currently in the running. He's certainly not my ideal candidate... but so far the rest are further from it. And I'm pretty sure my ideal candidate would lose in a landslide.
And of course I'm still rooting for his distant cousin:
