Chief Retirement Story Breaking Widely

UPDATE:  The University has confirmed the retirement.  Please check the original post for more links.

After we first broke the Chief Illiniwek retirement story yesterday evening, the Daily Illini followed up, and they graciously credited this site for having the story first.

This morning, the "Chief Illiniwek Will Be Retired on Friday" story is on WDWS (which is crediting the DI and Tribune), WICD-15 TV, the Chicago Tribune and the News-Gazette.

Please allow me to self-indulgently whine for just a moment - none of the media sources other than the DI mention IlliniPundit.com.  While that's pretty much what I expected, it's still very disappointing, especially as so many reporters were calling me last night (late last night!) asking me how they could confirm the story.

But such is life on a blog - when the media does mention blogs and bloggers, it's usually how irresponsible, unreliable and amateurish they are.  But when we get a big story first, and we get it exactly right, the blog's role is never mentioned.  I should know better than to be upset by such blatant omissions, but I'm very disappointed anyway.

And to think, just this week, someone accused me of plagiarism for not properly crediting the News-Gazette with a quote, even though I linked right to them.  I disagreed with the criticism, but corrected the citation anyway.  I doubt we'll ever see such courtesy or responsiveness in the media, and that's disappointing.

OK - that's the end of my petulant whining.  Blast me in the comments if you'd like, but I'm still proud that we had this story first.  And thank you to the DI for actually remembering to mention that.

And please keep this story in mind the next time you hear a "journalist" be dismissive of blogs and bloggers.

Don't worry, if the story falls apart and the Chief stays, you'll get the blame.

Congratulations for correctly hearing Loren Tate talk give all the details of this story at 5:10 p.m. Thursday on WDWS.

Now stop patting yourself on the back.

Thanks for breaking the story first. Finally the Board got a backbone. There will always be naysayers and complainers cause that is what some people live for. Keep up the great blogging.

I'm not broken up about the Chief going... however, we have public meetings and public votes for a reason, it isn't so the big decisions can get made behind closed doors and then farted out on a press release so they can wait 5 ish weeks til the next BOT meeting and hope the shitstorm is dead by then.

Glad to see at least one paper credited you.

Much appreciated Gordy. Welcome to our blogroll.

Look for much more as soon as the hearing lets out.

On the early edition of the news, the local blog illinipundit.com was credited with with the scoop.   Nice work!

"Congratulations for correctly hearing Loren Tate talk give all the details of this story at 5:10 p.m. Thursday on WDWS."

I have to go along with this anonymous post.  I heard Loren Tate on the radio as I drove home from work on Thursday.

HOWEVER, I don't feel the need to berate you about it, and I will also point out that Tate didn't exactly "give all the details." Congratulations to IP anyway -- it's still a nice boost to get credited for breaking some information.  Your rant was warranted at least in the general sense.

I was sticking up for on a Pantagraph.com comment section. One poster said not to trust your information, I set them straight. Good work on this! This just goes to show that blogs are going to become the new and widely accepted form of journalism in the not to distant future.

The Chief has been on his way out for at LEAST ten years.  I'm quite frankly surprised that anyone is surprised by this announcement.

Back in 1997 or so, none other than the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette did a feature investigating what exactly happened at other big name schools that got rid of their Indian mascots[1].  Although people would complain about how contributions to the university would fail, it turns out that in fact, they don't.  They don't decrease or increase, beyond the limited increase that's average over time.  Apparently the people who write all the letters saying they'll never give a dime, don't give many dimes to start with, and there is still plenty of demand for wealthy benefactors to see their names carved into stone or announced on the radio every hour.

One of the schools featured was Stanford.  They used to be the Stanford Indians until 1972 when that was dropped in favor of "Cardinal" and the tree logo.  Alumni donations didn't fall off. Sure, fans in the stands clung to the "Indian" gear (although it was no longer for sale) but with no official support, it died out after a while.

The "Chief" isn't even remotely like a real Illiniwek or related member.  It's the equivalent of calling a German guy French because hey, they both come from Europe, and his costume was made by a real Spaniard.  He's a Boy Scout Indian, which is a very American tradition, rooted as far back as the Boston Tea Party and Tammany Hall, but it's a tradition that is anachronistic in this day and age, so it's time to let it go.  Put up a statue, and let's move on.

Let's GET a real mascot, one that isn't divisive, something that we can cheer, something that can DO cheers, and get the crowd going, and doesn't require all manner of psuedo-religious PC kid gloves treatment all the time.

If the school keeps the Illini name, I just hope it doesn't stand in the way of getting a real new logo and image, and a real mascot.   Though, it's possible to have multiple names and even multiple mascots or logos.

But having a blank spot on the field while the band plays the three-in-one and everyone cries, will be LAME.  Do it once, maybe, but then, let's MOVE ON.

[1] Yes, yes, I know. Call it what you like, it makes little difference.

(not sure if this posts... site seems to be slow)

Thanks, everybody - especially for those who trusted me when I first posted it.

I realize that I'm whining about the credit and citations.  But I am grateful to those who recognize the tiny role we played in breaking this story.

I didn't hear the Loren Tate bit last night, but someone did tell me about it.  I wonder why the NG and WDWS didn't trust Loren's sources enough to run with it immediately, and why they were still searching for confirmation late last night?

Thanks for indulging me.

Considering how many people get their news from sites like this, I think it's pretty irrelevant that you got snubbed in the dinosaur media.

And now I hope you will use your power to promote the idea of changing the mascot to the Fighting Tim Johnsons! I bet he could get 20 or 30 laps around Assembly Hall during halftime...

"... the new and widely accepted form of journalism in the not to distant future"

Now how can that possibly be true when there hasn't been a single mention anywhere on here about what is obviously the biggest story of the twentieth century?  I'm referrring of course, to Anna Nicole Smith.  Inquiring minds want to know how this Chief thingie is going to affect Anna, and if it's not, why are we even talking about it?

(This just in: she's still dead.  In a surprise development, at the hearing to determine disposition of her body, it was revealed today that her remains have been purchased by Michael Jackson.  It is not yet known how this might affect the ongoing plans to make custody of her daughter one of the prizes in this year's American Idol competition...)

BREAKING NEWS - Popular local blogger, IlliniPundit declares to be the father of Anna Nicole Smith's baby! This has led to contentious debates on the site as 37% of the commentars and contributors to the blog also claim to be the father.

good work.  Sad day.

Wait, I thought that Chief Illiniwek was the father of Anna's baby.

Politicalchemy's picture

A friend just emailed me to say the Chief story made the front page of the Drudge Report, via the St. Louis Post-Dispatch website.  Link to it here.

IlliniPundit's picture

From that Post-Dispatch/AP story:

On Friday, a Champaign County Circuit Court judge rejected two students' request for a court order to ban the university from "capitulating to the NCAA by announcing the retirement of Chief Illiniwek."

So the court case was as pointless as I thought it was.

John Bambenek's picture

Like I said... they had no standing whatsoever. Only a formality keeps the judge from jettisoning the case immediately.

I wish the Di was a little clearer here:

"Rumors had been flying around on campus about the future of Chief Illiniwek in the recent weeks, especially after the Jan. 17 resolution passed by the Executive Committee of the Oglala Sioux tribe demanding the University return Chief Illiniwek's regalia."

The University has to return the regalia to the Oglala Sioux tribe?  Not an Illini tribe?  I remember in 1980 a 90+ year old Illini gentleman presented the standing Chief Illiniwek with a costume.  Joe and Ralph Garcia flew him into the football stadium via their hot air balloon.  No mention of him being an Oglala Sioux in any way.

Where is Emil Jones???? He wanted this done why hasn't He surfaced?  What about Mike Freirchs? This was a gutless move by Jones to blackmail the Board of Trustees.  A board appointed by the Gov., Jones was acting as the bag man for the Governor "Rod "  Its a sorry day when a few non- Indians can foul up an 80 traditon at the U of I . The new symbol of the U of I should be a de-nuted Jellyfish ! anyone of the members of the Board of Shame could be the model!!!!!!

Finally, this Chief thing can be put to rest.  Am I disappointed the Chief is retired?  Yes.  Is it an issue that warrants all this drama?  No.

I just can't figure out why Emil Jones is catching the blame.  Oh wait, maybe because he is a democrat and we're on a republican blog.  Maybe Timmy Johnson and Chapin Rose should have intervened YEARS ago instead of at the last minute like they did.  If Jones is the supposed culprit, as the guy from the Honor the Chief Society, Gordy, and various others have claimed; wouldn't the state republicans like Johnson and Rose have known this and thwarted his efforts long ago?

Jones has been in either the house or the senate since 1973.  Did he just wait until the mid-late 80s to make this his mission?  I mean the real concerns about the Chief didn't start until about that time anyways.  Has there been pressure on the University from Jones since then or only recently?  Personally, all these accusations and theories appear to be nothing more than republicans and pro-chiefers (mostly the same people) looking for someone to blame.

Let us not forget the NCAA role in this.  Had they not stepped in, the BOT would probably still be ducking the decision.  The NCAA plays a larger role in this decision than Jones does.  We've really seen this issue magnify since they stepped in.  Only then did the University even begin to REALLY make an effort to resolve the issue.  Wait, maybe Emil Jones has connections in the NCAA?  Or, maybe the leaders of the NCAA are democrats.  MAYBE, the NCAA doesn't want to have some protestors showing up at a championship event and drawing bad publicity for their organization.  Why do you think the Seminoles get to keep their mascot?  Because they have the "unique relationship" with the tribe and the community, not the same can be said of the Chief here.

I blame the University for taking 20+ years to figure out a decision.  They waited too long, and we're out of options.  They should have dealt with it long ago, and maybe there could have been a compromise or agreement satisfactory to both sides.

Celebrate the Chief's last dance and let's all move on.  My guess, we'll hardly notice any difference.

John Bambenek's picture

It was Emil Jones that did threaten to withhold ALL state funding last year if they didn't get rid of the Chief. It was Emil Jones that was involved on the state end during the illegal and violent occupation of the Henry Administration Building.

It's not like Jones didn't have his fingers in thie pie.

Gordy, I wouldn't worry about the agenda-based media. They still want to portray bloggers as bathrobe-wearing recluses who don't know beans about gathering the news. Meanwhile, the Tribune's corrections fill up almost an entire column on some days, and the agenda pushers are running front page stories about Anna Nicole.

You say you got the story from sources in the know, and you went with what you had. That's pretty much what any of the traditional media would have done.

Those of you blaming Emil Jones have missed the boat completely. Notice that the Board had already negotiated with the NCAA to immediately drop them from the post season ban list? This had nothing to do with Jones.

There are two things that led to this decision being done at this time: 1) the NCAA, and 2) the U of I's mediocre basketball team. Because the basketball team is in all probability heading for the NIT, the NCAA ban would cost Illinois a home NIT game. Projected revenue for each NIT home game? My guess is around $250,000. So the Board got this done in time to save one or more possible NIT home games.

Like virtually everything in America, this too came down to $$$.

That said, after 18 years of fighting this, I couldn't be happier.

How could Emil Jones be to blame? He was singlehandedly engineering the defeat of Saint Sen. Judy Meyers for the past year or so. I know that's true because I read it right here. Often.

And if it's on a blog, it just HAS to be true. (No blogger anywhere ever had an agenda, after all.... Most just follow the tradition of  'I only believe that which affirms my previously-held biases.')

I've long scorned the political fashionings here, but in this case, Illinipundit nailed it and did so before anyone else.

Handy Smurf's picture

Rich Miller really had his Howard Dean moment today.

Wasn't Jones on the old Amos n Andy TV series Didn't He play the "Kingfish"? and His Wife was "Saphire"? He sure looks and act like him! "Howdy Boys! How is Ya!"

Maybe if your hyperlinks weren't so stylishly difficult to read, you wouldn't be accused of plagiarism when you're linking to a source. Love of design is the source of all evil? Why not -- design is as much a sign of godless hubris as is money.

Kevin Sandefur's picture

Well.

Well, well, well ...

"Maybe if your hyperlinks weren't so stylishly difficult to read, you wouldn't be accused of plagiarism when you're linking to a source."

Huh?

Links do blend into paragraphs of text very well and can be hard to read at times

Some folks have a tendency to look for the underline on links

You might think of adding an underline effect to your hover style on your hyperlinks

That is, if you've had enough complaints to warrant the change

IlliniPundit's picture

"You might think of adding an underline effect to your hover style on your hyperlinks"

The underline effect is already enabled for hovering on links.

That said, I'm working on some font color changes, although I doubt they'll make a very dramatic difference.

Thanks for the suggestion, though - I do always appreciate them.

". You can argue for or anti chief all day long but the bottom line is his performance was legal and not dangerous and it was a performance (not obligated to be authentic or non offensive to someone). The group that wielded so much power disproportionate to their numbers were and are empowered by their perceived "victim status". This in itself is bogus on 2 levels 1. As individuals there is no documentation that those who say they were offended are or ever were victimized any more than anyone in this world is. There are fat, ugly dumb, socially inept, short men, tall women, etc that are treated badly not hired, promoted, “included”, respected etc.etc. .. Every day. Its life.2.. Yes the Native Americans of 100 years ago suffered greatly and wrongly at the hands of the government and general population. The Native Americans of today ARE NOT THEIR ANCESTORS. They did not suffer the way their ancestors did yet they want to parlay their ancestor’s sufferings into pity, guilt ridden special treatment today. The Native American culture was of 100+ years ago truly had honor, dignity, courage, integrity and fierce independence; I do not see that in the Native Americans of today. With their incessant whining, self pitying, and use of the guilt of whites that were not even born when this country destroyed the Native American culture, they have become what the Native Americans of 100+ years ago use to call "fort Indians"( The ones who gave up their independence and hung around the forts begging.) While they fight paper tigers like Illiniwek, and in the process, (mostly because of dishonest unethical tactics), bring down enormous bad feelings towards Native Americans, they build casinos in their sacred lands like grand Marais and despoil them. HOW DO THEY JUSTIFY DISPOILING THEIR SACRED LANDS TO MAKE A FEW BUCKS? WHERE IS THE COMMITMENT TO NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE IN THAT? There is rampant violence and alcoholism on their reservations and now gambling problems. Yes, the white culture destroyed the Native American culture as it existed including their economy, interpersonal mores and duties, and their values. But we cannot go back in time and it is going to be up to Native American as individuals if they want to live with the dignity, honor independence integrity that they profess to hold so dear. The truth is the Native Americans have already lost the qualities (see above) that so distinguished their culture in the past and all they can do now is to try and LOOK as though they have not been so diminished. So they fight hollow fights like Illiniwek using degrading tactics (if you can’t beat the white man join him) and hope no one will notice. So this token victory perhaps will be celebrated at the next pow- wow by doing non- WCK (white college kid) authentic sacred dances. The sad thing is, the sacred dances mean nothing without the honor, dignity, courage, spiritual; life, fierce independence and integrity that went with it. We saw little enough of any of that during the past 20 years from the anti-chief crowd. Crazy Horse, Kicking Bear, Chief Joseph, Cochise, Red Cloud must be turning over in their graves!
