Politicians are great at coming up with all sorts of memorable slogans...
Ronald Reagan said it was "morning again in America."
Bush Sr. yearned for a "kinder, gentler nation."
Bob Dole growled "where's the outrage?!"
Bill Clinton talked about a "bridge to the 21st century."
Dubya claimed he was a "compassionate conservative."
In the footsteps of these comes John McCain and his call for "common sense conservatism."
A snippet from Reuters, where McCain criticizes his fellow Republicans:
"We increased the size of government in the false hope that we could bribe the public into keeping us in office," McCain said, adding Americans "still prefer common sense conservatism to the alternative."
Whatever happened to the "straight talk express?" Maybe his focus group research told him it was time for a new slogan...

I tend to like how Mark Levin refers to John...
"John McLame".
I never have been a McCain fan, probably never will be either.

yeah, that "common sense conservative" killed how many judge nominations with his Gang of 14?
Surely he could have done the same thing to kill some spending bills.
"I see we conservatives have a lot more work to do." - Mark Levin.
"Common-sense" conservatism is a given, just like "wild-eyed" liberalism. Common sense never included dramatically increased government spending. Maybe next year McCain will discover "hot" coffee (but not too hot, Xian) and "cold" beer. Better late than never though.

LOL :-)
While I am not sure that McCain is who I will support in the primary in 2008 he has been working hard to make amends to the base. He will have allot less work to do then Giuliani who never really liked the base of the republican party and has made fun of them.
When it comes to the excess spending in the congress lets place the blame were it belongs on the moderate republicans that helped the democrats push the spending up in the senate.
McCain comes with too much Congressional 'baggage'.
If you're not careful run4, some irate moderate Republican is going to report you to the "It's My Party Too" crowd. Your only hope for salvation is to chant "Forgive me Christie Whitman" five times under the light of a full moon.
I read McCain's "common sense conservative" speech. He hit on the right message and the right themes. He even sounded almost Reaganesque. But the problem with McCain has never been his eloquence, it's been his consistency and his substance - spouting off one thing when it benefits him politically, then reversing himself down the road.
And tying into the "Congressional baggage," he had better have a defendable voting record when it comes to some of these bloated budgets. You can be sure Rudy and Hillary's crack research staffs are pouring through his votes on the "bridge to no-where" and other controversial projects.
Rudy and Hillary's crack research staffs--Their not for drug legalization too are they. "Congressional Baggage" yes who needs experience that a broad brush statement anyway. I guess your looking for someone the media will like so we have a candidate that will have a chance. My suggestion would be to recruit Hillary or Obama the Media loves them. Hey I didn't say he was my final pick but if your looking for someone who can bring the party together he's allot closer then Rudy.
